Stratigraphy

The Architecture of Deep Time.

The Grand Canyon is not a hole in the ground; it is a library of the Earth’s crust. Its walls reveal nearly two billion years of geological history in a single vertical mile.

Carved by the relentless energy of the Colorado River over the last six million years, the canyon exposes the **Great Unconformity**—a gap in the rock record where over a billion years of history simply vanished from the strata. Walking from the rim to the floor is equivalent to traveling back through half the lifespan of our planet.

Erosional Forces

While the river is the primary architect, the canyon’s width is a result of side-canyon erosion and mass wasting. Rainwater seeps into cracks in the limestone and sandstone; when it freezes, it expands, wedging massive blocks of rock away from the cliffs. This **freeze-thaw cycle** is the silent engine that keeps the canyon growing wider every year.

The Vishnu Basement

At the very bottom of the gorge lies the Vishnu Schist. These dark, twisted rocks were once the roots of an ancient mountain range that stood long before the dinosaurs. They represent the "basement" of North America, forged under intense heat and pressure, now exposed to the desert sun after eons of burial.
